Community Garden Goals:

  • Work out the details of the land donation between the Claytons for the land donation

  • Establish a community garden on the land donated by the Clayton Family

  • Establish a partnership with District Judge Gerald Baca and the Fourth Judicial District Drug Court Youth Program to create a community service program for youth to work in the garden

 

Proposed Objectives of the Community Garden:

  • Provide fresh produce to the community of Las Vegas

  • Help families educate their children about fresh healthy foods

  • Help community members learn organic gardening practices

  • Turn currently vacant lot into a beautiful, productive piece of land

  • Provide a place and project for strengthening relationships in the community

  • Promote good neighbor land use activities

  • Work with youth doing community service through the District Drug Court

Winter:

  • Publicize the community garden project, make a list of interested individuals, and then call, email, or give each of them an introduction/welcome letter.

  • Call a meeting for those who showed interest in the garden project.

  • 1st meeting agenda: -Welcome, introduction-Envisioning stage. What type of garden—theme (ex. Neighborhood garden), goals, objectives. - Form a planning committee (sub-committees for each task), organizational structure, positions-

    Next steps:

  • Investigate land options

  • Outreach/build support, funding -Schedule next meeting date

Late Winter:

  1. Finalize budget/start fundraising, looking for donations ($ and in-kind)

  2. Plan the garden--determine rules and regulations

  3. Purchase insurance

  4. Outreach—look for volunteers (to help develop site) and gardeners

  5. Work with Groundworks on the plan and layout for the garden

  6. Organized community forums on the garden with Groundworks and MainStreet

Winter/Spring

  1. Organize the Gardeners: orientation, applications, waivers, fees, etc.

  2. Finalize garden plan

  3. Gather all remaining materials needed—plants, seeds, tools, compost, etc.

Spring/Summer

  1. Prepare and continue to develop site

  2. Build garden boxes

  3. Install first gardens

  4. Work on Art Park
